Maternity/ pregnancy photography in London and Surrey
24th December 2013
I have recently started doing maternity/ pregnancy photography in London and Surrey and have launched my bump to baby package - for £300 you get a pregnancy photography session + 5 digital images and a newborn photography session + 10 digital images. Here are some pictures I took on a recent session in East Dulwich, South London.

The most challenging thing with pregnancy/ maternity shoots if like me you don't have a studio, is lighting in the client's home. You can either use a flash as per the first photo below or be more creative with the lighting as in the second and third pictures. On this shoot in Clapham, South London I had a lamp on the floor behind the woman and one draped over the door to the left.

Family photographer in London and Surrey - photography tips
21st December 2013
When I do family photography sessions I like to mix it up between colour and black and white, and posed and candid reportage type-shots. It's nice to get both:-)

Here are some posed pictures from recent family photography sessions in London and Surrey:

The main tip I would give for photographing families, especially with older children, is to keep it fun! Spin your child around and that moment where you stop is when to press the shutter. Throw your baby in the air. Tickle them. Laugh with them. Let them climb on your back. Make it into a game. Here are some of my favourite natural family photos:

Child photographer in London and Surrey - photography tips
16th December 2013
Taking photos of children/ toddlers is so much fun but can be some of the most challenging shoots a professional baby and child photographer can do. Mainly because they just never sit still!!!

I have several tips for photographing children between 1 and 3 years of age:
- give them something to play with that will keep them in one place
- take photos in the bath - use bubbles to make them look up/ laugh
- lie them on the bed, get someone to tickle their belly, and take photos from above
- take them to the park and get photos on the swing/ seesaw

The main thing is to go with their mood and don't force them to sit in one place but follow them around with the camera instead. And keep them entertained as they get bored easily!! In a child photography session I will often take photos in several rooms, including the bathroom and the garden.

Here are some pictures from recent child photography sessions in London and Surrey to illustrate:

Baby photographer in London and Surrey - photography tips for 4-8 month olds
10th December 2013
Babies between 4 and 8 months are my absolute favourite to photograph - they have developed individual personalities, smile on demand (obviously with silly noises from me!!) and can be photographed in a variety of different poses. Lying on back with feet in the air, sitting, lying on belly photos (my favourite), sometimes even standing holding mummy and daddy's hands. And they can't yet crawl away from the camera!!

The pictures from my baby photography session with 6-month old Hugo in Clapham, South London show the variety of poses that babies at this age can do:

The main baby photography tips I would share for babies at this age are:

- take a variety of different poses and in different outfits (naked on belly is also great)
- make sure that the background is plain and uncluttered - I throw a blanket over the bed
- aperture should be set wide e.g. F4 or set to portrait mode to get those blurry backgrounds
- camera should be in continuous shooting mode as heads are constantly moving
- have someone stand behind you making your baby laugh (or use a squeaky toy yourself)

Here are a few of my favourite photos from recent baby photography sessions in Surrey:

Child photographer London & Surrey - outdoor photography in London parks
06th December 2013
The beautiful mild autumn and winter weather has meant I have been able to do some photography sessions with older children in some of the lovely London parks - such as Dulwich Park, Clapham Common and Wimbledon Common. Outdoor photoshoots are not as suitable for younger babies who don't walk, especially if they are trying to crawl through the mud!

Getting the light right is the most important thing for outdoor photography. Backlight is the best, with the gorgeous yellow and oranges showing behind the child. The most important thing is for the sun not to be behind the photographer, as then there will be harsh shadows falling on the child's face as well as squinting eyes!

Newborn photographer in London and Surrey - photography tips
03rd December 2013
I have been so busy doing newborn, baby, child and family photography shoots around London and Surrey in the run up to Christmas that I haven't had any time for blogging. So rather than my normal individual posts about the babies and children whom I take photographs of I though I would show you a few of my favourite pictures from the sessions, along with some handy tips to recreate the magic at home this Christmas :-)

First of all I will start with the gorgeous newborn photos that everyone loves to take. There are a few important things to remember if you want sleepy, curled up photos:

- newborn photos are best taken within the first 5-10 days
- naked babies need to be warm so crank the heat up
- a full newborn is a happy newborn so feed them just before the shoot
- make sure your baby is undressed before sleeping so you don't wake him or her by undressing her
- camera settings - wide aperture e.g. F4 or set to portrait mode, continuous shooting to capture those elusive smiles

Here are some examples of the gorgeous pictures which can be taken following the above rules (Hunter, 6 days old, Clapham, London):

It's not always possible to get sleepy shots if your newborn likes being awake, so I always go with the mood of the baby. You can get some amazing pictures of newborns with their eyes open too, providing they are alert and not screaming! Another tip is to mix up your composition - some close ups, some full length, different angles. See these photos of Layla, 9 days, from Dulwich, London for examples.

Lastly, don't forget those cute details like photographing your newborn's hands and feet. Black and white photos also are timeless and classic as Owen, 7 days, from Wimbledon, South West London shows.

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about including your family within the newborn session - there will be a separate post on this :-)
